North-facing rooms do not get brighter when you paint them white; they get flatter. The flat had been white for two owners and read as grey in every photograph taken in it.

The sitting-room wall went dark instead. Against it the daylight has something to be lighter than, and the room gained a depth it had not had since the sixties.

The chair was bought before the paint and is the reason for the colour rather than the other way round. That is not how it is supposed to go, and it worked.
